Albumin

Albumin is the major plasma protein synthesized in the liver from amino acids absorbed through the ileum. It plays an important role in maintaining and distributing extracellular fluid and transporting various hormones, vitamins, and trace metals throughout the body.

Clinical Significance

• Increased albumin levels may occur during dehydration due to reduced plasma water content. Levels can also rise because of prolonged venous stasis during blood collection.

• Decreased albumin levels may result from excessive protein loss through the kidneys, skin, or intestine.

• Reduced levels may also be associated with decreased synthesis due to inadequate dietary intake, liver disease, or malabsorption.

• Increased protein catabolism, including conditions associated with fever, untreated diabetes mellitus, and hypertension, may also contribute to decreased albumin levels.
