Alkaline Phosphatase (ALP)

The alkaline phosphatase (ALP) test helps evaluate liver disease and bone disorders by measuring the level of ALP in the blood. The enzyme is found in several tissues, particularly the liver, bile ducts, and bones.

Clinical Significance

• Increased ALP levels can occur when liver cells are damaged, causing more of the enzyme to enter the bloodstream.

• ALP testing is particularly useful for identifying bile duct obstruction, as the enzyme is concentrated around the cells lining the bile ducts.

• Obstruction of one or more bile ducts, including obstruction caused by a tumor, can lead to elevated blood ALP levels.

• Elevated ALP may also be associated with bone disorders and should be interpreted together with other clinical findings.
