Accurate measurement of glucose in body fluids is important in the diagnosis and management of diabetes, hypoglycemia, adrenal dysfunction, and other conditions.

High serum glucose levels may be seen in Diabetes mellitus, patients receiving glucose-containing fluids intravenously, during severe stress, and in cerebrovascular accidents.

Decreased glucose levels may occur due to insulin administration, insulinoma, inborn errors of carbohydrate metabolism, or fasting.
