Creatinine is a waste product produced in muscles from the metabolism of creatine, a compound involved in energy storage and utilization. It is filtered primarily by the kidneys, making serum creatinine measurement an important laboratory test for assessing renal function.

Clinical Significance

• Serum creatinine is commonly used to evaluate kidney function.

• Increased creatinine levels may indicate reduced renal filtration or impaired kidney function.

• Serum creatinine may remain within the reference range until kidney function has declined substantially, meaning a significant reduction in renal function can occur before a noticeable rise in creatinine is observed.
