AST/GOT

Aspartate Aminotransferase (AST), also known as GOT, is an enzyme found in high concentrations in the heart, liver, skeletal muscle, kidneys, and red blood cells (erythrocytes). When these tissues are damaged, AST can be released into the bloodstream, resulting in elevated levels.

Clinical Significance

• Supports the evaluation of liver and tissue damage.

• Elevated AST/GOT levels may occur in myocardial infarction and other cardiac conditions.

• Increased levels can be associated with viral hepatitis, liver necrosis, and cirrhosis.

• AST may also rise with skeletal muscle damage and muscular dystrophy.

• Results are typically interpreted alongside ALT/GPT and other relevant laboratory tests to help identify the potential source of tissue injury.
