ALT/GPT

Alanine Aminotransferase (ALT), also known as GPT, is an enzyme found predominantly in the liver, with smaller amounts present in the kidneys, heart, skeletal muscles, pancreas, spleen, and lungs. Elevated ALT/GPT levels are most commonly associated with liver cell injury or hepatic necrosis.

Clinical Significance

• Supports the evaluation of liver disease and hepatic injury.

• Elevated levels may occur in cirrhosis, viral hepatitis, toxic hepatitis, and obstructive jaundice.

• In acute viral or toxic hepatitis, ALT/GPT is generally higher than AST/GOT.

• In many chronic liver diseases, ALT/GPT may be lower than AST/GOT.

• Increased ALT/GPT levels may also occur with extensive trauma, muscle disease, circulatory failure, hypoxia, myocardial infarction, and haemolytic disease.

• ALT/GPT results are commonly interpreted together with AST/GOT and other liver function tests.
