Antistreptolysin O (ASO)
The Antistreptolysin O (ASO) test is used to help determine whether a person has had a recent infection caused by Group A Streptococcus. It is particularly useful when a previous streptococcal infection is suspected as a possible cause of complications such as rheumatic fever or glomerulonephritis.
Clinical Significance
Helps detect evidence of a recent Group A Streptococcus infection.
Supports evaluation of rheumatic fever in patients presenting with compatible signs and symptoms.
Helps investigate post-streptococcal glomerulonephritis, a kidney complication that can occur after a streptococcal infection.
May be performed alongside the anti-DNase B test to provide additional evidence of a recent streptococcal infection.
Particularly useful when the original strep infection was untreated, mild, or no longer producing identifiable symptoms.
Testing may be considered when a patient has symptoms suggestive of rheumatic fever or glomerulonephritis along with a recent history of sore throat or confirmed streptococcal infection.
