C-Reactive Protein (CRP)
The C-reactive protein (CRP) test is a blood test that measures the level of C-reactive protein in the blood. CRP is produced in response to inflammation, making it a useful marker for identifying and monitoring infection and inflammatory conditions.
Clinical Significance
Helps identify infections and conditions associated with inflammation.
Can be used to monitor the progression or response to treatment of inflammatory diseases and infections.
May help assess post-surgical infections. CRP levels normally increase within approximately 2–6 hours after surgery and typically decrease by around the third day.
Persistently elevated CRP levels several days after surgery may indicate a possible infection or ongoing inflammation.
Increased CRP levels can occur with infections as well as various long-term inflammatory diseases.
