Albumin

Albumin is the main plasma protein produced by the liver from amino acids absorbed through the ileum. It helps regulate extracellular fluid balance and transports hormones, vitamins, and trace metals throughout the body.

Clinical Significance

• Increased levels: Commonly associated with dehydration or prolonged venous stasis during blood collection, which reduces plasma water content.

• Decreased levels: May result from protein loss through the kidneys, skin, or intestine, reduced synthesis due to poor nutrition, liver disease or malabsorption, or increased protein breakdown associated with conditions such as fever, uncontrolled diabetes mellitus, and hypertension.
