Alkaline Phosphatase (ALP)

The Alkaline Phosphatase (ALP) test helps assess liver and bone health. ALP is an enzyme found mainly in the liver, bile ducts, and bones, and its blood level can increase when these tissues are affected.

Clinical Significance

• Liver and bile duct disorders: Damaged liver cells or blocked bile ducts can cause ALP levels to rise. The test is particularly useful for identifying bile duct obstruction, including obstruction caused by tumors.

• Bone disorders: Increased ALP may also occur with conditions involving increased bone formation or activity.
