Creatinine is a waste product produced by muscle metabolism from creatine, a compound involved in energy storage. It is filtered by the kidneys and is commonly measured as an indicator of renal function.

Clinical Significance

Serum creatinine levels are useful for assessing kidney function. However, creatinine concentration may not begin to rise significantly until renal function has decreased by approximately 50%, so results should be interpreted alongside other measures of kidney function.
