ALT/GPT

ALT/GPT (Alanine Aminotransferase) is an enzyme found in high concentrations in the liver and, to a lesser extent, in the kidneys, heart, skeletal muscles, pancreas, spleen, and lungs.

Elevated ALT/GPT levels are generally associated with liver disease involving hepatic cell damage, including cirrhosis, viral or toxic hepatitis, and obstructive jaundice. ALT/GPT levels are typically higher than AST/GOT in acute viral or toxic hepatitis, while in many chronic liver diseases, ALT/GPT may be lower than AST/GOT.

Elevated ALT/GPT levels may also occur in extensive trauma, muscle disease, circulatory failure with shock, hypoxia, myocardial infarction, and hemolytic disease.
